King Philip II
Trading rivalry and religious differences had been pushing Spain and England to war for years.
King Philip II, the powerful king of Spain, wanted England's ruler to be Catholic.
I do not consider Queen Elizabeth, who is a Protestant, the rightful ruler of England!
To make matters worse, English adventurer, Sir Francis Drake, had attacked Spanish ports and ships.
King Philip believed Queen Elizabeth should punish Drake for his raids.
Instead, she honored him with knighthood.
This enraged Philip, so he sent the Spanish Armada, a fleet of 130 Spanish ships that was under the command of the Duke of Medina Sidonia, to conquer England in 1588.
The invasion had failed completely.
This marked the end of Spain's control over the seas, but war between England and Spain continued until 1604.
