The setting effects the character that he usually can see the island at four miles away. He usually can see at night. But the setting around them. It's dark and the sailors are spooked.
The quote shows that Rainsford has used things in the jungle to try and not get caught. He learned to use things around him. He knows how to survive in the jungle. He has experience in different settings around the world. He uses those skills when he was in the jungle to survive. He made the trap to catch something. He wanted to distract the General.
It shows over 2 days Rainsford already knows how to get Back to the General's house without being caught by the dogs. He has done this before trying to hide from something and not he himself killed he uses his past experience to survive.
