Laius, king of Thebes, was warned by an oracle that his son would one day kill him. Accordingly, when his wife, Jocasta gave birth to a son they decided not to tell anybody.
The couple told one of their servants to bring the baby up to a mountain, tie its feet, and leave it there. Luckily, the baby was found by a shepherd.
The shephard gave the baby to King Polybus of Corinth and his wife and was raised as their son, given the name Oedipus
When Oedipus grew up he visited Delphi and learned that he was fated to kill his father and marry his mother. Traveling toward Thebes, he encountered Laius, who provoked a quarrel in which Oedipus killed him.
Oedipus found Thebes plagued by the Sphinx, who put a riddle to all passersby and destroyed those who could not answer. Oedipus solved the riddle, and the Sphinx killed herself. In result, Oedipus married his mother and became king of Thebes.
