Catalans are people in Catalonia, which is in north eastern Spain, they are 1/5 of Spain's economy and they have their own language. They want their independence from Spain.
In Fransisco Franco's rule Catalans were suppressed after the civil war in the 1930's.
The Prime Minister of Spain is now Mariano Rajoy and he is against Catalonia becoming its own country, like many others.
Catalans took a vote in Barcelona, Spain but the government closed buildings and many protests formed, 26,000 police officers are now in Catalonia.
All of Spain is now becoming more nationalistic and forming a great bond as a country because of Catalonia wanting to break off.
Now two nationalistic groups going against each other and nothing has happened since but Catalonia is might declare independence.
