  • Shut up Steven!
  • You'll have to wear what you have. We can't afford new clothes!
  • Sarah feels embarrassed by her poor clothing, resulting in her not being able to make friends and socialise. An individual may resort to social isolation to avoid embarrassment (Denham & Hazler, 2002).
  • Sarah's poverty causes a negative impact and she starts to skip class because she feels she can't make friends. (Brooks-Gunn et al as cited in Czaja, Nikulina & Widom, 2011 ).
