Five males from a large family were affected by mental retardation & abnormal violent behaviour
Data was collected from the five males by analysing urine samples
Tests showed disturbed monoamine metabolism associated with a deficit of the enzyme monoamine oxidase A (MAOA).
In each of the 5 males a point mutation was identified in the X chromosome of the gene responsible for production of MAOA
The defect in the gene leading to impaired serotonin metabolism is likely to be responsible for the mental retardation & violent behaviour.
So the MAOA deficiency in the family is associated with a behavioural phenotype that accounts for their aggressiveness.
Yes, however not all males in the family are affected by violent behaviour , also its an extremely rare condition so it is not possible to generalise the results.
