Throughout the novel, Esperanza has changed as a character. In the beginning, Esperanza was selfish. For example, the narrator describes that Esperanza told Miguel that he was “the housekeeper’s son and she was the ranch owner’s daughter and between them ran a deep river. Esperanza stood on one side and Miguel stood on the other and the river could never be crossed”. As you can see from her actions, Esperanza is selfish.
As the story continues, Esperanza begins to change. After she arrives at the farm in America and begins to take care of the baby's because isabel and her family members went to go to school and work. Esperanza is acting fearless because she thinks that she can take care of the baby's when no one is helping her, but then the baby's get sick and she thinks what to do and gives them rice water and the baby's stop getting sick. This is shown when she is fearless.
In the end, Esperanza is caring. We can see that she has changed by looking at mama. For example, mama was in the hospital when she was sick from the sand storm and Esperanza thought that she is going to the hospital to die so she tried to help mama get better by bringing her mom and paying all the medical bill.
