The first scene begins with a woman warning a doctor that Lady Macbeth has been sleepwalking. In her sleep she is trying to wash her hands. She cries out that the smell of blood will never leave her hands. The doctor explains that guilt leads to insanity.
Scene 2 starts with a group of Scottish lords talking about military situation. They are led by Malcolm and plan to meet an army at Birnam Wood. In scene three Macbeth is has no fear of Malcolm because no man born of woman can kill him. His servant Seyton tell him an army is approaching and Macbeth insists on wearing his armor. He also demands the doctor to help Lady Macbeth with her delusions.
In the country near Birnam Wood the army is lead by Malcolm. He comes up with the idea of making the soldiers hold branches in order to disguise their numbers.
Macbeth claims that his castle will help him against the army. He is then given the news that his wife is dead. Then he is given news that the branches of Birnam Wood are moving meaning it the time of defeat has come. Macbeth accepts his impending death and wants to die fighting.
They finally reach the castle and Malcolm orders the soldiers to draw their swords. In the following scene Macbeth kills Young Siward.
Macduff essentially kills Macbeth after explaining he was cut from his mother's womb and Malcolm is declared the King of Scotland.
