"Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two makes four. If that is granted, all else follows"-Winston (Orwell 81)
Soldiers take Winston to the Ministry of Love where he finds that O'Brien was also a Party Spy and this was "the place where there is no darkness" all along. Here, O'Brien spends months torturing Winston, trying to brainwash him whilst he struggles to resist.
After months of not succeeding, O'Brien takes Winston to Room 101, where he threatens to release a cage full of rats onto Winston.
Winston is not able to resist, as his worst fear are rats. He finally snaps and yells out for O'Brien to do it to Julia instead of him. This is what O'Brien wanted all along.
Winston has been effectively brainwashed to love Big Brother and The Party. He no longer challenges it's views or teachings, as he has become completely complacent. Him and Julia never have any contact ever again.
