The town was afraid of Steve so they became mean and dangerous because they were trying to blame Steve for what happened to their town. this evidence supports the theme because the town was scared and they tried to hurt one another

The town blamed Steve for having a ham radio set for signaling aliens
Charlie was scared of the unknown figure walking in the dark (which was Pete) so he shot him. this evidence supports the theme by saying that fear lead to charlie killing pete
Charlie shot Pete Vanhorn because he thought he was the alien on maple street.
the town was suspicious of charlie being so quick to kill Pete that the town thought that Pete knew something that the town didn't about charlie.
The town rioted against Charlie because he was so quick to kill Pete
