Storyboard Text

  • The Ultimate Boon
  • "He killed it! My Father killed it! Jonas said to himself, stunned at what he was realizing." (Lowry, 188)
  • Refusal of the Return
  • "I won't! I won't go home! You can't make me!" (Lowry 190)
  • Magic Flight
  • "Jonas put down his fork and stared at his father. 'Release?' he asked." (Lowry, 206)
  • "Even I voted for Gabriel's release..." (Lowry, 206)
  • Jonas finds out that release really is when someone is killed. He sees this when he watches the video of his dad releasing (killing) the twin earlier that morning. This is when he finally learns that the community needs to change and grow, or The Ultimate Boom of our journey.
  • Rescue from Without
  • "...realized with heartbreak how cold and weak Gabe had become...he forced the memory of warmth into the thin, shivering body in his arms." (Lowry, 219-221)
  • Jonas does not want to go back to his father, and family unit, because he does not want to see his father and has to plan an escape. Jonas wants to stay with the Giver, and not go back, providing the Refusal of Return in our journey.
  • The Crossing or Return Threshold
  • "The memories had fallen behind him now, escaping from his protection to return to the people of his community." (Lowry, 221)
  • Jonas goes back to his family unit and finds out Gabe is getting released which is the last thing he wants to have happen. Jonas has to plan to escape later that night instead of letting Gabe get released, or the Magic Flight in our journey.
  •
  • Gabriel is freezing and weak and Jonas uses the power of the memories in order to save Gabe and warm him up. This is where Jonas rescues Gabe and continues to fight past this point, which is the Rescue from Without in our journey.
  • Jonas had left the community with Gabe, which achieved his journey of leaving memories behind with the community to encourage them to change. This is when he wants to share his memories back to the community, changing them, which is The Crossing or Return Threshold of our journey.
