  • 18th Century France had unfair social classes called "estates". When King Louis XVI further bankrupted the country and tried to tax the 3rd Estate to make up the difference, the common people decided that they had enough---The French Revolution had begun!
  • The Storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789 marks the day the people took the revolution to the streets. When the people of Paris heard the King was threatening the National Assembly, they stormed the Bastille to obtain weapons to protect the revolutionaries writing their new constitution.
  • Eventually the revolution was taken over by very radical factions. Maximilian Robespierre eventually had King Louis and his wife Marie Antoinette guillotined as enemies to the revolution. The French Republic was born in the blood of royalty. France's thrones were now empty. The Reign of Terror would soon begin!
