Storyboard Text

  • Reverend Parris is praying now, and, though we cannot hear his words, a sense of his confusion hangs about him. He mumbles, then seems about to weep; then he weeps, then, prays again; but his daughter does not stir on the bed.
  • Praying
  • He is bending to kneel again when his niece, Abigail Williams, seventeen, enters . Susanna Walcott, a little younger than Abigail, a nervous, hur-ried girl, enters.
  • Susanna Walcott's here from Doctor Griggs.
  • What does the doctor say, child?
  • He bid me come and tell you, reverend sir, that he cannot discover no medicine for it in his books.
  • Tituba is supposedly seen waving her arms over a fire in the forest - somewhere that is unknown to the rest of the colony. It is assumed that Tituba is performing acts of witchcraft.
  • You did, you did! You drank a charm to kill John Proctor's wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor!
  • You drank blood, Abby! You didn't tell him that!
  • Abigail, smashes her across the face
  • Betty, you never say that again! You will never--
  • Shut it! Now shut it!
  • Hale: Good then. He goes to the bed, looks down at Betty. To Parris: Now, sir, what were your first warning of this strange-ness? Parris: Why, sir - I discovered her - indicating Abigail - and my niece and ten or twelve of the other girls, dancing in the forest last night
  • I never called him! Tituba, Tituba...
  • Abigail, it may be your cousin is dying. Did you call the Devil last night?
  • Hale, grasping Abigail
  • I should like to speak with Tituba
