  • Montresor's reason was that Fortunado made fun of Montresor's family so Montresor had him killed in the catacombs of his home.

  • The text stats,"... I thrust my torch through the small hole that remained. I let it drop. A jingling of the jester's bells was the only response... The I piled my ancestral bones high in front of the new wall. And for a century no mortal has disturbed them.
  • This shows that after all the years of his family being made fun of, he finally broke and killed the 'evil' Fortunato.
  • Montresor finally reached the point of insanity after Fortunato teased him so many times that he had him either suffocated, starved.
