In this scene, after sending the Duenna away, Cyrano gets his chance to talk with Roxane. After reminiscing about when they were children, Roxane admits to Cyrano that she is in love. This excites Cyrano because each characteristic she describes fits his description. However, as she describes her love, Cyrano finds himself disappointed that she couldn't possibly be talking about him because she calls this man she loves, handsome. When she reveals the object of his affection is Christian, she makes Cyrano promise to look out for him among the Gascons.
I am in love with someone.
But he does not know it.
He is proud, noble, young, intrepid, handsome..
Handsome! Then she can't be talking about me..
And it just so happens, dear cousin, that he's a member of your regiment!
It's Baron Christian de Neuvillette. Do you think you could watch over him? For me?
All right. I will befriend your little Baron.
