Storyboard Text

  • I'm having some trouble studying for science, do you think you can help?
  • Sure! What's the topic?
  • Well, there are many reasons as to why hurricanes are becoming stronger.  Follow me and ill show you how humans play a role in the increasing severity of hurricanes.
  • How does human activity effect the length and strength of hurricanes?
  • One of the main reasons is the burning of fossil fuels. These fuels release carbon dioxide gases that get trapped in the atmosphere and cause the ocean and planet to heat up. The warmer waters in the ocean breed stronger hurricanes.
  • What about the independent and dependent variables? How do those relate to fossil fuels?
  • The increase in a hurricanes length and strength is dependent on the burning fossil fuels because the gases effect the increased change in the climate . This effects the heating of the ocean and the warmer waters breed more powerful hurricanes
  • Exactly! Now lets go research some evidence to back it up.
  • Oh, I get it! The dependent variable is the increase in a hurricanes length and strength and the independent variable is the burning fossil fuels!
  • Wow that's crazy! That means that if the cimate continues to change, by the time 2057 arrives the climate will have increased 11.4 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Researchers have found that an increase in the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere increases earths temperature by 4 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit  every 25 years!
  • Fossil Fuels
  • DATA
  • Hurricane Irma
  • So how can we stop it?
  • Scary! These hurricanes have been becoming worse and worse! Category 4 and 5 hurricanes have increased 80% in the last 30 years. I wonder if they will continue to increase in power over the next 20 years.
  • To prevent more devastating hurricanes, the burning of fossil fuels must be scaled back which means humans need to change their habits.  If factories cut back on the burning of fossil fuels it would be a move in the right direction toward a pre=historic industrial revolution state.  This would decrease the heating of the planet by 2.7% every decade.
