"He felt he could see a low dark form, a bulk in the darkness, a shadow that lived, but now it moved away, slithering ans scraping it moved away and he saw or thought he saw it go out of the door opening." (Page 80)
"He touched each quill carefully. The pain made it seem as if dozens of them had been slammed into his leg, but there were only eight, pinning the cloth against his skin." (Page 81)
Brian has a hard choice of either throwing his hatchet or just having self defense, he decides to throw his hatchet but he misses. The porcupine shot his needle and got a huge needle stuck in his leg.
Brian struggles to take the needle out because he is in huge pain and the needle has ridges that make it hard to get ride of.
As Brian takes out the needle, and he has a nauseous feeling and feels like he is about to faint. He struggles to walk on one leg because of the needle and he can't escape the "dangers" in the forest.
