This is the mom telling the son that life for her was rough, it wasn't easy. But she wants to help him even thought she didn't have a good life. "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair, it had tacks in it, and splinters, and boards torn up, and places with no carpet on the floor-bare."
Shes now telling him that she kept on going. She had ups and doing but she still tried, and worked. "But all the time, i'se still been a-climbin' on, and reachin' landin's, And turnin' corners,"
She is talking to him about he should never give up. Always try, even when the times are rough. "So boy don't you turn your back,. Don't you set down on the steps 'cause you finds it's kinder harder. Don't you fall now-"
