In this scene Atticus took up the gun and shot Tim Johnson. Atticus didn't want to but he did because he was brave enough to do the right thing even when he didn't want to do it. On page 127 Atticus says," haven't shot a gun in thirty years-". This inferred he didn' want to do it but he did it because it was he right thing to do.
In this scene Jem wasn't brave enough to ignore Mrs. Dubose. He got mad and destroyed her garden, he did not do the right thing because he didn;t want to. This was clearly a mistake Jem made. On page 137 scout states,"we sulked around the kitchen." Jem knew he messed up.
Atticus did the right thing in this scene by defending tom Robinson. Atticus got a lot of hate for doing it, but he did it because he knew it was the right thing to do. On page 197 Jem says, " Somebody might hurt him." Jem knew that Atticus was doing the right thing even though there was a risk of getting hurt. Atticus sets a great example for the a theme of this book, sometimes doing the right thing isn't always pretty.
