  • The Summit:
  • The date of the first summit was May 25, 1960
  • Did you know that the summit is as high as airplanes fly?
  • You have to be 16 to climb the south side and 18 to climb the north.
  • The first northern summit was on May 29, 1921
  • Weather:
  • The yearly temperature range is -80 degrees Fahrenheit to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. 
  • The Jet Stream sits on top of Everest most of the year.
  • Winds can reach up to 200 mph
  • Sherpas:
  • Sherpas are an ethnic group native to the mountainous regions of China, Bhutan, and Nepal. They serve as guides to mountain climbers. 
  • We are amazing Climbers!
  • Sherpa means people of the east.
  • Only 200 people have ever scaled Everest. The first attempt was by a British explorer. Climbers can lose 10-20lbs and burn 10000 calories climbing.
  • Climbers:
  • I am Junko Tabei, the first woman to summit Everest.
  • These people are Jordan Romero (left) and Malavath Poorna (right). They are the youngest climbers to scale Everest.
  • Geography:
  • Everest consists of shale, marble, and limestone.
  • Mt. Everest has been around for 60 million years!
  • Cool Facts:
  • Did you know that Everest grow 1/4 inch every year?
  • Sherpas won't stand on the summit of Everest. They believe a goddess lives there.
  • The youngest people to summit Everest were our age!
  • Sherpa's names are usually the day of the week they were born on.
