  • Sarah Elisabeth Jacob (Sarah E. Goode) was Born into Slavery in 1850 Toledo,Ohio to Oliver and Harriet Jacobs.
  • She gained her freedom at the end of the Civil War (1865) and moved to Chicago shortly after. In Chicago she met and married Archibald Goode, a carpenter.

  • In Chicago Sarah E. Goode successfully ran a furniture store. She also had a few kids though no one knows the exact amount
  • Sarah E. Goode came up with the Idea of a bed that when folded up could also be used as a desk based off the small sizes of Chicago apartments

  • On July 14,1885 Sarah E. Goode became one of the first African American women to receive a patent.
