  • Meet Jeff Jefferson, a son of privilege turned to a moderate
  • Jeff moves west
  • Jeff reads Uncle Tom's Cabin, 1852
  • Jefferson was born to a wealthy slave owning family in Alabama, but this life did not suit Jeff so he moved west.
  • the Kansas-Nebraska act and popular sovereignty 1854 
  • Jefferson was born to a wealthy plantation family in Alabama, but decided to carve out his own  life on the western frontier, settling in east texas. It was there he was first exposed to bitter debates between the North and south on Texas' future as a slave state.
  • The Dredd Scott court case decision 1857 
  • Jeff was intrigued by Stowe's novel that struck the nation, but coming from a slave holding family he did not believe the novel accurately represented his family's relationship with their slaves. 
  • election of Abraham Lincoln 1860
  • Jefferson disliked This act and Stephen Douglas because he saw it as a greedy motivation for Douglas to fill his coffers. 
  • Growing up, Jefferson knew how important slaves were to his family business, and his dad always stressed the importance and constitutionality of the fugitive slave laws and the value of slaves as a commodity. However, from the time he spent in Texas seeing the struggle between Free and Slave states, Jeff was conflicted.
  • Jefferson after much evaluation decided that Lincoln was the proper choice. He wanted to be affiliated with the republican party and he saw the democrats split and not throw their weight behind one candidate. He also disliked Stephen Douglas since the Kansas-Nebraska act
