Your highness, time to go make sacrifices to Nanna. As you remember, the head of religion, namely the king, has to keep the patron god of the city happy.
Welcome to Ur. Our patron god is Nanna, one of the seven gods who decree fate, also the moon god.
We Sumerians believe that our sole purpose is to serve the gods. We only feel confident of good fortune if the gods are happy. That is why the king has to go make Nanna happy. The most important god in our cities is the patron god.
Let me see if I remember our gods...
There are 50 "great gods" after that. Then there are the rest. There are about 3,000 gods. This means we are polytheist/ our religion is polytheism. We have gods for everything, even pickaxes!
There were four creator gods, Ninhursag, the mother god, An, or Anu, who was the cheif god and god of the sky, Enlil, god of air and who later replaced An, and Enki, god of water.
There are then the seven gods who decree fate. This is the first four gods and Nanna, the moon god, and his son, Utu, the sun and moon god, and Inanna, the love and war god and daughter of Nanna.
I have to go, thanks for letting me share my information with you!
