  • 1952 Is DNA or Protein the genetic material of the cell?
  • Hershey and Chase believe DNA is the genetic material
  • "Well we will need radioactive sulfur and radioactive phosphorus."
  • Also the viruses (T2 Bacteriophage)
  • sulfur 35S - radiolabeled proteins phosphorus 32P - radiolabeled DNA
  • ...ok so now that we have both of these isotopic solutions... 
  • Independent: The viruses - either 35S or 32P Dependent: bacterium (E. Coli) Control: Phage with no radioactivity
  • ...now we let the viruses infect the bacterium (E. Coli)
  • -...so the viruses and bacteria began to separate by configuration...-
  • -- Plan -- put in blender to agitate so the phages separate outside of the bacteria (the cells and contents)
  • You gather the phages and I will get the blender
  • - Observations - larger bacteria - formed a solid pellet smaller viruses - remained in the supernatant
  • Pellet formed on top of the liquid
  • Pellet formed below the liquid
  • Determined: 32P is radioactive 35S is not radioactive
  • Conclusion -- DNA is the genetic material and this is because the DNA was transferred to the bacteria
