  • He wasn't in any pain.
  • The night was cold and wet... And the white family were waiting for the soldier to visit. Mr. White and Herbert were playing chess, meanwhile Mrs White was knitting. Sadly, Mr.White makes "a fatal mistake" during the game that foreshadows an event later on.
  • Climax
  • When the soldier finally arrives, he begins to speak of a paw that he has. The soldier begins to go into sadness and throws the paw into the fire. Mr. White saves it and doesn't listen to the consequences. That night they wish for 200 pounds, not a sensible wish.
  • Falling Action
  • The next day, Herbert goes off to work and there is still no money. A messenger then comes to their home to inform them that their son is dead. They receive 200 pounds in compensation.
  • Resolution
  • The next morning, Mr. White awakes to the sound of Mrs. White crying, begging for the paw to get her son back. Mr. White doesn't want to see hos son dead so he wishes to keep him away.
  • Mrs. White opens the door to see if her son is there because the knocking stops. To their horrible luck, their son is not outside. Mrs. White stands there crying in disappointment.
  • Mr. White then goes outside to see Mrs. White and they both go outside and just stare at all of the empty land and deserted street.
