The narrator wants to get revenge on Fortunato, a connoisseur in wine that has a big ego, for insulting him many times.
The narrator and Fortunato meet at a carnival in Italy, and he takes Fortunato to his catacombs. Fortunato believes that the narrator is having him taste some wine. But Fortunato has a cold, and the narrator tries to go back with him, but he wants to keep going into the catacombs.
The narrator and Fortunato go deeper. They go into a room and the narrator chains Fortunato to the wall.
The narrator builds a wall to trap Fortunato in. While he builds the wall, he savors Fortunato's yells and pleas. Fortunato tries to convince him not to leave him there.
The narrator closes the wall, leaving Fortunato there to die.
"In pace requiescat!"
