The setting of the story is in a small village. The story takes place in June and the author describes the warm summer day and green grass. All of the characters seem to know one another and speak politely to each other as they enter the town square in anticipation of the lottery. All of this creates a calm or pleasant mood. However, the author adds foreshadowing by having the young boys gather stones.
