A major symbol presented in chapter 1 is in the first paragraph when they describe the pool, its a place of peace and sanctuary in this place there is nothing to hurt or scare them, no rush no anxiety about work. its a place to themselves.
the theme in chapter 1 is dreams once again. This is showed when lennie talks about petting the rabbits he goes on and on about this and clearly these rabbits hold a place in his heart, they are part of his dreams and he cant let that go. They also include more plans about the future dream farm they aspire to have.
In the first chapter we meet lennie a strongly built tall man with slow mental capabilities. He acts and thinks like a small child and its showed that George cares for him and takes on the parental role for him we are also informed of an incident involving lennie grabbing a red dress and not letting go because hes scared which leads to them having to leave the town thus the reason they're here.
