Storyboard Text

  • Hi kids! I am here to tell you all about the Bossy E. Boy oh boy is he a bossy one!
  • Wow! How is that possible??
  • Did you know that many one-syllable words have a silent E at the end that we don't pronounce?
  • Sometimes, 4 letter words have an "e" at the end, which is silent.
  • But...how is the E bossy??
  • Oh I know! The bossy E tells the other vowel in the word to say its own name! That's why it's bossy!
  • Can you give me examples?
  • Words have either a short vowel sound or a long vowel sound. When there is an E at the end, the other vowel in the word becomes a long vowel, well most of the time.
  • Absolutely! Here are a few...snake, made, hate, shake. If you take the E off of "made" you now have "mad." The Bossy E makes all those vowels say their name.
  • I think I get it now!!!
  • Wonderful! What other words can you come up with that have a Bossy E at the end?
  • Rate, mate, late, date....... Cool!
