  • Dark They Were, and Golden-Eyed
  • The Bittering's land on Mars. Mr. Bittering has a bad feeling about it.
  • We should go back. I have a bad feeling about this.
  • No! We are safe here on Mars.
  • A radio flash just came. Atom bombs hit New York! All the space rockets are blown up. No more rockets to mars ever.
  • I think I just saw something move in the mountains.
  • The Bitterings build a cottage and settle in.
  • Mr. Bittering notices strange changes in the food and animals. The cow has three horns!
  • Yes... no. I don't know.
  • Look they are different. Onions but not onions, carrots but not carrots. Taste the same but look different.
  • Mr.Bittering starts to build a rocket ship, becuase no one else cares about leaving. He starts to get thinner and taller. Their eyes become yellow. A strange word emerged from Mr.Bittering's lips. The kids have yellow eyes now too.
  • Always, I guess.
  • Iorrt. Iorrt.
  • Cora, how long have your eyes been yellow?
  • Mr.Bittering abandons his rocket ship project. He becomes full martian. The Bittering's move to the mountains. Another rocket lands on Mars. The men shouted "We won the war on Earth! We're here to rescue you!"
  • We won the war on Earth! We're here to rescue you.
