  • The Lincoln-Douglas debates began in 1858, discussing the critical importance of slavery and state's rights.
  •  Power should reside at the local level and should reflect the wishes of the people.
  • Stephen Douglas
  • After seven debates, it had come to the conclusion that Stephen Douglas had won. However, this gave Abraham Lincoln a reputation throughout the North. 
  • YAY!!!!!
  • The new President of the United States is.......ABRAHAM LINCOLN
  • In the November 1860 election, Lincoln again faced Douglas. The announcement of Lincoln’s victory signaled the secession of the Southern states.
  • South Carolina was the first to secede from the Union. On Christmas Eve, South Carolina issued a statement blaming the situation on the North's hostility towards slavery and declaring themselves as an independent state.

  • By March 1861, seven states had seceded, and the Confederate States of America had been formally established, with Jefferson Davis as president. The states that followed South Carolina were Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas
  • What do I do!!!!!
  • After only a month of the states seceding and forming a new nation (for themselves), the American Civil War began. The election of 1860 did result in a further divide between the North and South. However, Lincoln's legacy lies in his perseverance in preserving the Union and bringing an end to slavery.
