Storyboard Description

Meet Erica Fernandez, an example of a real life superhero. Impressed yet?

Storyboard Text

  • Meet Erica Fernandez, real life hero.
  • At age 12, she stopped a billion - dollar company from going through with a project that would've sent nearly 560 thousand pounds of air pollution into the air every year.
  • One day she received word of BHP Bilton, the richest mining company in the world, planning to build a Natural Liquefied Gas facility nearby.
  • The plan involved a 36- inch pipe running under her community.
  • Erica knew her community was targeted because most people there were Mexicans and didn't know English, so the company would've had few dissenters. If the plan had gone through, 280 tons of air pollution would be released every year. Erica decided to stand up and say, "NO!".
  • She partnered up with organizations like Sierra Club to help stop BHP. She led marches, organized protests, called the media, and even got 250 high - schoolers to rally against BHP.
  • When she gave a passionate speech before the California State Lands Commission, the balance point was tipped. BHP's idea was vetoed.
  • SAY NO
  • STOP!
  • Her efforts even led to the creation of SB412, a bill introduced in the California Senate that entitles communities to have a say in coastal construction proposals.
  • She was accepted to Stanford University, where she got a complete scholarship and is studying now.
  • Standing up to a billion dollar corporation of any sort would have made a successful businessperson's knees tremble, and for a young girl, at the age of 12, to do what she did and succeed; that is truly admirable.
  • So next time something seems impossible, remember Erica. It's possible. With enough hard work and dedication, you really can do anything.
