Mrs. Dubose battled with a morphine addiction; everyone in town knew this, including the children. Jem and Scout witnessed the impact of this first hand when they had to go to her house and read to her.
When Jem and Scout went to church with Calpurnia they experienced first hand racial discrimination towards themselves.
The trial exposes the kids to the issue of rape. Scout is not exactly sure what it is so she asked Calpurnia, who in turn told her to ask Atticus about it.
