Woman, by heaven you've stung me now! who dared to move my bed?
I have been loyal!
WHY DID YOU LIE TO ME!
I had to make sure it was you
The major theme that runs throughout book twenty-three of the Odyssey is appearance versus reality. During book twenty-three, Odyssey returns home from his long journey. When he returned to Ithaca it appears that Penelope was unfaithful while Odyssey was away. In line 391 to 398 it says "Woman, by heaven you've stung me now! Who card to move my bed? No builder had the skill for that-unless a god came down to turn the trick. No mortal in his best days could budge it with a crowbar. There is our pact and pledge, our secret sign, built into that bed-my handiwork and no else's!" She is telling him that she was faithful even though it appeared that she wasn't.
