  • Forced to flee Scotland
  • Mary sent to France
  • In 1561 Mary returned to Scotland, but it was a very different Scotland to the one she had left in 1548. In the intervening years it had become predominantly protestant.
  • in may 1558 , Mary queen of Scots was forced to flee Scotland and seek sanctuary across the border in England. Her arrival would cause problems for Elizabeth.
  • Mary and Darnley
  • Mary was born in 1542, the daughter of James v of Scotland and his french wife, the devout Catholic Mary of Guise.
  • 
  • When France prepared to send troops to defeat the scottish rebels, Elizabeth had been forced to conclude the treaty of Berwick with the Scots in 1560.
  • Mary arrives in England
  •  In 1565 Mary married Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, and in june of the following year gave birth to a son, the future king James V1 os Scotland
  • On the evening of 9 February 1567 she left the house to attend a wedding. That night the house was blown up and the following morning Darnleys body was found in the garden. He had been strangled.
  • In may 1568 Mary managed to escape from her captivity at Loch Leven and fled across the border to England. Her arrival in England presented Elizabeth with a serious problem.
