"Long years ago in old Japan lived in the Province of Echigo, a man and a wife. They had been married for some years and were blessed with a child."
The father had been suddenly summoned to the capital on business.
"The husband finished his business and returned." The wife recieved a present which was a mirror.
Weeks later, the wife grew greatly sick and sadly passed away. She gave the mirror to her daughter and told her, "Take out this mirror and in the clear and shining surface you will always see me."
Eventually, the husband found a new wife that was mean to the daughter. As the daughter gazed in the mirror, she thought that she was cursing a picture of the step mom to die. The daughter was truley looking at herself, thinking it was her mom.
The step mom reported the daughters false actions and her father talked to her. When she explained to her father what she was actually seeing, the father explained to the step wife. She then forgiven the daughter. "
"From this time on, the three lived together as happily as fish in water. No such trouble ever darkened the home again, and the young girl gradually forgot that year of unhappiness in the tender love and care that her step mother now bestowed on her. Her patience and goodness were rewarded at last.
