Darrow starts off chapter 33 by sleeping in his bed.
While he sleeps, Darrow has a dream of himself with Eo in the vale. It is a very sensual dream, in which he hears her breath and fire crackling, smells her scent.
Darrow is woken out of his dream by a loud knocking at the door. He pulls up a visual of the hall and sees that Mustang is there, waiting for him. He wants to let her in, but is hesitant because he does not want to hurt her.
Mustang gets irritated by being kept waiting, so Darrow finally lets her in. She admires his suite and they exchange a few words in simple conversation. They discuss Mozart, robots and aliens, the House of Grimmus and the Bellona. After some playful banter, Darrow admits he read Mustangs dissertions. Mustang wants to know what Darrow thought of her dissertions.
As Darrow answers what he like best, Mustang slaps him with a practice razor. Darrow is startled by her actions, but Mustang tells him when he is on his heels, he is a liar. On his toes he spits the truth. Darrow admits he likes it because specialization makes them limited, a fact from which Gold is not immune. Mustang ponders this.
Mustang tries to pry why Darrow wants to be a warrior. They discuss, then Mustang asks Darrow if he thinks about another woman when he looks at her. He doesn't answer so she turns to leave. He reaches for her but she flings him off, saying she cannot turn off her feelings like her can. She tells him he will become like her father if he walks this path alone, so she tells him to ask her to stay. He does not, and Mustang leaves.
