The story starts at a gathering where 2 men are arguing whether the death penalty is better than life in prison. Soon after, the banker makes a bet with the lawyer worth 2 million dollars.
The next day, the lawyer is sent to live in a building on the bankers property for 15 years to prove how solitary confinement affects a person.
The lawyer begins to feel depressed and lonely then he begins to find things to do to entertain himself. He teaches himself different languages, reads a lot of books, and ends up gaining a lot of intelligence.
Eventually the banker realizes that he is going to lose 2 million dollars and goes to where the lawyer in imprisoned to kill him.
Once the banker gets to where the lawyer is staying he sees the lawyer asleep at the table with a note to the banker placed next to him. The banker picks up the note and reads it. It says how the layer doesn't want the money anymore because he feels his intelligence is worth more than the 2 million
The banker leaves the house where the lawyer is staying and is completely shocked by what he read. The banker goes home and lays awake all night thinking about the lawyer's note to him.
