  • Today open your book to chapter 23. We are going to see their government, Agriculture, art, medicine , and science.
  • The government of China during this time used a system called bureaucracy. The highest level of Hans lived in the capital.  The civil servants were chosen by ability and knowledge. Every three years they could get promoted or demoted.
  • Government 
  • Han farmers were faced with many difficulties. The farmers had to grow enough food for their families and to stock the shared granaries. They also had to give up one month of unpaid labor. They made three major inventions. One was the chain pump, another was an iron plow, and a wheelbarrow.   
  • Agriculture 
  • The Han dynasty's major invention was paper. They wrote their characters with a brush and ink. They used silk before paper. It was easy to roll up but was very expensive. They also used bamboo sticks but it was very awkward. Paper changed the way people communicated. It was cheaper to make paper. There was a varity of things to make paper.    
  • Art
  • The Hans believe that when the forces of yin and yang is unbalanced, illness occurs. They have two techniques to heal the people. One is acupuncture which you stick small needles in parts of the body. Another is moxibustion which  you put small leaves and sticks and you burn it. They learned that you listen to heart beat, it willtell you their health. Also blood comes from the heart. 
  • Medicine
  • The Han dynasty made several discoveries. The astronomers recorded when they saw comets. They also discovered that the moon shines because of the sunlight.  They also made the seismograph and the magnetic compass. The seismograph told how hard the earthquake was. The compass was used as correctly positioning their buildings.  
  • Science
