  • What is Personal Space? We have all heard the saying, you are invading my personal space. But what does it mean? Personal space is the comfort level at which one feels saf and secure from others with whom they are conversing. Hall (1963, 1966) as cited by HIll (1998),proposes that there are four zones of personal space. They are intimate distance, personal distance , social distance and public distance. It boundaries are scuh that one entering and leaving the Kalinago territory, knows when they enter and exit. In the same manner, territoriality deals with the boundaries, physical or otherwise that we adhere to in our engagement with others. Hill (1998), postulates that "territory refers to a relatively fixed geographically area." They are primary, secondary an public. We erect those boundaries to prevent others from infringing on our personal space because territory has a wide scope and may allude to the communiity in which we reside to our world. In the video, we saw that mats were symbolic boundaries. A mat suggests that someone lives there and should you desire entry, one ought to knock on the door. Other boundaries were physical one like walls and doors that serve to keep others from invading our space.
