On July 14th, 1789, revolutionaries attacked the Bastille. This prison not only held much needed gunpowder, but also represented absolute despotism, a symbol that the people resented in their monarch's unpopular rule.
Infuriated by the outrageous feudal dues and taxes they were being forced to pay, the rebellion in Paris spread to the countryside of France. Here, the third estate resorted to violence as they invaded noble's homes and ripped legal documents to shreds.
I hate these taxes!
Infuriated by Marie Antoinette's lavish spending and the shortage on bread, women of the third estate stormed the palace in Versailles, calling for the queen's head.
