It was the first day of school, and Scout's knowledge of reading made Miss Caroline furious because Miss Caroline wanted to teach the class her way. When school was over, Scout went home and told Atticus that she did not want to go to school anymore.
"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view–" (Lee 39).
After Mrs. Dubose calls Atticus a "n*gger lover", Jem gets furious and destroys her camellia bushes. Jem now faces a punishment of reading to Mrs.Dubose for a month. Jem realizes that he has stopped Mrs. Dubose from her morphine addiction.
"I wanted you to see something about her– I wanted to show you what real courage is, instead of getting the idea of that courage is a man with a gun in his hand" (Lee 149).
After Jem and Scout realize that Atticus is a deadshot, they wonder why he has never bragged about it.
"People in their right minds never take pride in their talents" (Lee 130).
