Wow, what a beautiful necklace!
Set in Paris, France in 1880. A young middle-class woman dreams of a lifestyle far beyond her reach. One day, her husband comes home with tickets to attend a very wealthy party, and she is excited to attend, but upset that she will look not "high class".
Her husband gives her money to buy a dress for the party, but she is not satisfied until she asks her wealthy friend, Madame Forestier, for a necklace to borrow.
Yes, I have had a pretty hard life, since I last saw you, and great poverty--and that because of you!
Mathilde has a wonderful time at the party, but afterward discovers the diamond necklace is lost. The couple decides to find an identical one and replace it. The replacement money costs more than they make, and it takes them 10 years to pay it off.
Oh, my poor Mathilde! Why, my necklace was a fake! It was worth at most only five hundred francs!
After 10 years of hard work and struggles, the couple finally pays off all their debts.
One day Mathilde is walking to the market and sees the friend that she borrowed the necklace from. She decides to tell her what happened.
The friend Mme. Forestier, tells Mathilde that the necklace was a fake and it is worth nearly nothing.
