Portia doesn't want Bassanio to choose a casket in case he chooses wrong, but she also doesn't want him to leave.
Bassanio insists on choosing immediately, and Portia stands by anxiously, wishing she could tell him the answer.
Bassanio correctly chooses the lead casket, winning Portia's hand in marriage. Portia admits that she loves Bassanio.
Shylock is winning his court case against Antonio and refuses to show mercy. Portia, dressed as a lawyer, arrives and outlines 'The quality of mercy', urging to Shylock to be merciful.
When Shylock refuses, Portia examines the bond, and using her knowledge of the law, argues Shylock out of his pound of flesh, and his money.
Portia insists the Shylock have the justice he wanted - she accuses him of trying to kill Antonio, and he is fined half his wealth and made to become a Christian.
