  • Talkers are no good doers; be assur'd/We go to use our hands and not out tongues
  • Richard meets with the Murderers to discuss the execution of his brother the Duke of Clarence
  • "…My hardy, resolved mates/...be sudden in the execution/Withal obdurate…"
  • Clarence, having awoke from the screaming of Furies, reveals his horrific dream to the Keeper
  • WHat was your dream, my lord? I pray you tell me
  • "What pain it was to drown. What dreadful noise of the water.../What ugly sights of death?/ I [had] pass'd.../ unto the kingdom of perpetual night."
  • The Murderers, with an edict illicitly obtained from the King, arrive to take the Duke of Clarence into their custody and run into Lord Brakenbury
  • "I will not reason what is meant nearby/ Because I will be guiltless from the meaning"
  • "I would speak with Clarence/…see our commission/ and talk no more."
  • Arriving in Clarence's cell, and finding Clarence asleep, the Murderers struggle to carry out their wicked deed
  • I thought thou hadst been resolute
  • Judgement hath bred a kind of remorse in me.
  • Having awakened to an argument about how he is to die, Clarence begins to plead with his two captors. He is escorted into the hall and their the argument continues
  • And he that hath commanded is our King.
  • "The great King of kings hath in the law commanded thou shalt not murder/ Will you then spurn his edict [for] a man's?
  • What we will do, we do upon command.
  • "A bloody deed and hastily dispatched/How fain, like Pilate, would I was my hands…"
  • The good Duke is murdered in the cellar, against the conscience of one of the murderers who leaves in disgust
  • If this will not do, I'll drown you in the malmsey-butt within!
