Erich Honecker became the leader of the communist party in East Germany in 1971. He used his secret service, the Stasi, to keep control for the next 18 years. His harsh regime led citizens to flee East Germany in 1989. In the fall of 1989 protests were taken against the regime.
The communist government opened the entire border to the west on November 9. After the wall opened hundreds of thousands went over the boarder. Many families reunited. They tore down the entire wall due to citizens on both sides tearing at it.
After the wall was torn down they started to have free elections. the Christian Democrats won around 50 percent of the votes in March 1990. They wanted to have political union with West Germany. On October 3, 990 the West and East were reunified.
