  • You sure that about 'equality' was a mistake?
  • Oh, yes, sir. I was swallowing blood.
  • Denouement - Receiving the Scholarship
  • Boy, take this prize.
  • The narrator, still naive to truth, steps up to give his graduation speech about Social Responsibility. He begins strong, constantly being told to speak louder and repeat himself as the white men laughed uproariously.
  • Denouement - The Dream
  • "To Whom It May Concern, Keep This Nigger-Boy Running."
  • However, being nervous and bleeding in his mouth, he mistakenly says "Equality" instead of responsibility. This immediately quiets the crowd, who begin to question him about his intentions. The narrator becomes fearful, stumbling to rectify the mistake.

  • After concluding the speech, the superintendent rewarded the narrator with a scholarship to the State College for Negros. He tells him to "lead his people in the proper paths" and "encourage them in the right direction".
  • Credits
  • At the closing fo the story, the narrator has a dream after feeling triumphed having "beaten" his grandfather. However, he comes to realization during this dream, suddenly realizing the truth about his grandfather's dying words and how they would forever haunt him.
