Liesel's family planned on giving her and her brother to a foster family so that they could be safe from the war. On the way to the foster family her brother died. When they arrived she was welcomed into the family which consisted of an old woman Rosa Hubermann and her husband Hans Hubermann.
On the way to her adopted family Leisel found a book called The Grave Digger's Handbook. The book interested her so she attempted to read it. Soon she realized she couldn't understand it so her "Papa" taught her how to read.
They started with learning the letters in the alphabet. Then soon moved on to writing longer and bigger words. This is the one of the first moments Liesel found she had an interest in reading.
Hans welcomes in a boy named Max Vandenburg to stay with them. Max had to stay with them or he would be sent to a concentration camp due to the fact that he is a Jew. Liesel starts to fell concerned that her foster family will get caught for hiding him in their basement.
Soon Liesel becomes friends with Max. They start to share stories and even write books together.
As the war has got more and more surreal Max decides to leave the Hubermans to protect them. Soon after he left Max ends of getting caught and has to walk through Himmel Street.
