Annie Moore was 17 when she left her homeland of Ireland with her two younger brothers.
Annie's parents had already moved to the US for better job opportunities. Annie was going to New York to be reunited with their parents.
Will we ever return to Emerald Isle? I'm really going to miss the green, lush valleys of Ireland. No! I can't think about that right now! Life will be better in America so I must be strong for my brothers.
Annie and her brothers were bunked in the steerage class, the lowest, dirtiest, section of the ship. For 12 days they had to endure the cramped confined spaces of the vessel.
In January 1892, they had finally reached "The Land of the Free", America. The Statue of Liberty welcomed all newcomers that entered through Ellis Island. Annie and her two brothers were the first to be processed through. Ellis Island is now a museum today.
People born in the US felt that they were superior to immigrants and often discriminated against them. Annie and her brothers were just happy to finally be back with their parents.
