Intentionally introduced in the late 40’s for fur ranching.
The Nutria’s original range was South America which included: Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
There’s no way to prevent their invasion, but the Nutria species were released into the wild by ranchers who could no longer afford to feed and house them.
Nutria were brought to America for fur ranching. During World War II fur prices collapsed and many ranchers lost interest. The animals were released and/or escaped into marshes where they quickly became established.
When the Nutria fled into swamplands they were suddenly discovered.
The Nutria is damaging many crops in Florida and destroying the swamp lands. These crimes made poor Charlie the Nutria go missing!!
